Let’s hope digital dating is dumped for good after lockdown

Thankfully my search for love was over before dating went digital. When I was single, we usually stumbled across potential partners in the pub – can you imagine that?!

We’d then go on a first, and even second, date before we felt we had the true measure of a guy. But there’s no time for that now.

From what I hear from my younger colleagues, the filtering process has been boiled down to a quick swipe left or right, followed by a couple of text messages.

You’re lucky if you are even bought a coffee before being digitally dumped into the virtual reject bin.

I’m guessing that when you do finally meet someone you really like, the temptation is to hold on to them for dear life. So I can understand why so many fledgling couples threw caution to the wind and shacked up during lockdown.

This week’s cover star Danni Menzies is among them. The TV presenter had only been on a few dates with her handsome war hero before they decided to isolate together in Scotland.

When we caught up with Danni (pages 6&7), she told us: “It propelled things quite quickly. So I have a boyfriend now. It is quite amazing.”

Only time will tell if these lockdown lovers will go the distance but the pandemic has definitely reminded us that there’s no substitute for the human touch.

So when the pubs, clubs and cafes do finally reopen, I hope people appreciate how much more fun it is to click with someone in real life. And, who knows, maybe digital dating will be dumped for good.
