Gerrard wants Ibrox Board to be digging deep

Steven Gerrard is adamant he needs more players for the new season.

The Rangers manager last night admitted that he has asked the Ibrox Board to finance additions to his squad.

To p of his list of priorities is signing another striker to compensate for the loss of Jermain Defoe to injury.

Gerrard revealed his desire for new recruits after watching his men defeat Coventry City 2- 0 at Ibrox.

He said: “We need more, and I’ve told the club that.

“I’ve been honest and open about what we need.

“In terms of where we are at from a financial point of view, those are questions for other people.

“I have made it quite clear that we need to add to what we’ve got.

“We need to add players into the 11 to make us stronger and then, naturally, that will make the squad stronger.

“At the moment, we still need to get people in the door.

“We’re still waiting for Jermain’s scan results. We know it’s a hamstring injury.

“We don’t know how long he’ll be out for, but it’s normally a minimum of a couple of weeks with a hamstring.

“That’s the one area that’s giving me slight concern at the moment because we don’t have enough numbers.

“We’re actively looking to add someone and address that situation.”

Gerrard believes that defender Filip Helander, who made his comeback yesterday, has only an outside chance of facing Aberdeen on Saturday.

Rangers are trying to organise another bounce game for Tu e s d a y afternoon.

He said: “One of the big reasons for trying to get a game on Tuesday is to try and add to the 30 minutes Filip got.

“He’ll be fit enough in terms of the injury, but it’s whether we think he’s going to be sharp enough to go from the start against Aberdeen.

“If we can get the game on, that could be a big factor on whether he’s available to start or not.

“Steven Davis has an Achilles’ niggle. He had it a couple of weeks ago, and it only lasted a day or two.

“It flared up on Friday and we didn’t want to risk him. We’re hoping that he’ll be back training in a couple of days.

“G etting another game on Tuesday would also help some of the lads who haven’t started as many games as they would have liked in pre-season.”
