Ajeti’s out to make up for a lot of lost time

Albian Ajeti is desperate to get himself fully fit so he can help Celtic recover from European embarrassment.

The Swiss, a £ 4.5- million summer signing from West Ham, came off the bench at Tannadice eight days ago to score a winner against Dundee United.

However, he was unable to ride to the Hoops’ rescue once more against Ferencvaros when again thrown on for the final few minutes of the Champions League qualifier.

As much as watching from the sidelines for the bulk of the night was a source of frustration for the 23- yearold, he insists he understands the logic behind Lennon’s decision.

“My last start was back in January, so it has been a really, really long time,” he said.

“I didn’t play a lot last season, and have only had maybe eight to 10 training sessions since I came to Celtic.

“So I have to get back to full fitness. “I know that, and I’m pushing myself hard in training to get to the point where I am ready to play 90 minutes again.

“When that moment is will be up to the manager to decide.

“As it is, I’m happy to have already scored my first goal and helped the team, and I think there will be many more goals to come when I am fitter.”

Ajeti did not score at all in nine appearances for West Ham last season.

The fact he made a point of talking up his new manager on moving to Scotland hinted at his unhappiness at those who had been in charge of him before.

Now settling in to his time at Celtic Park, he remains convinced he made the right choice.

“I always knew how big Celtic is, the history, and the fan base they have,” he said. “I know the pressure will be on all the time.

“But the gaffer gives me the confidence to succeed. He helped me during a hard time. Now my aim is to do my best to try to give it back by playing well.

“It needs to work for both of us. The main reason I like him is his honesty. He’s straightforward with players.

“He has been a player himself, so he knows what’s going on in the dressing room and how the players are after training or games.

“It makes it much easier for me to adapt myself to the team and get a good relationship with the gaffer.”
