Jamie Murray and Neal Skupski continued their strong form to reach the quarter- finals of the men’s doubles at the US Open.

Murray and Skupski were finalists at the Western & Southern Open last week on the same courts and followed up their first-round win over the fourth seeds by defeating Brazil’s Marcelo Demoliner and Dutchman Matwe Middelkoop 6- 3 6- 2 on Friday.

Murray will now find himself across the other side of the net from Bruno Soares, the man with whom he won the US Open title in 2016.

Brazilian Soares and his Croatian p a r t n e r Ma t e Pavic were 5- 7 7- 6 ( 5) 6- 4 winners over Jack Sock and Jackson Withrow.

Murray said: “It’s weird because we’ve been here over three weeks but until today it felt like we hadn’t really achieved anything because we’d only played one match at a grand slam.

“Obviously last week we had a good week, we played a lot of matches.”

British interest in the singles is already over but hopes remain high in the m e n’s doubles, with Australian Open champions Joe Salisbury and Rajeev Ram also through to the last eight.

Daniel Rowden took gold in the 800 metres at the Muller Br itish Athletics Championships yesterday after getting the better of Jake Wightman at Manchester Regional Arena.

Wightman, a 1500m specialist but not taking part in that event in Manchester, led on the last bend before being ove r t aken in th e final 50m by Rowden, who clocked a time of one minute 45.94 seconds.

Keely Hodgkinson powered to victory in the women’s race in two minutes and 3.24 seconds.

Andrew Morgan- Harrison triumphed in the men’s 200m, clocking 20.69 seconds, despite an apparent injury issue.

The women’s champion was Hannah Williams in 23.83, claiming the title her sister Jodie had won the previous year.

The heats had seen

Kristal Awuah, who claimed 100m silver on Friday night, disqualified, along with Kaliyah Young.

In the 1500m races, Laura Weightman crossed first ahead of 5000m champion Jessica Judd, and George Mills won the men’s title.

Other victories on the track included Daniel Knibbs and Laviai Nielsen over 400m.

Holly Bradshaw retained her pole vault crown, and Morgan Lake also made a successful title defence as she won the high jump.

Last year behind Lake in second place was Katarina Johnson- Thompson. The world heptathlon champion was among a number of big names not involved in the event in Manchester.

Great Britain’s Georgia Ta y l o r - B r ow n w o n the women’s race at the Triathlon World Championships in Germany.

The 26- year- old claimed her first world title with a superb p e r f o rma n c e in Hamburg.

She broke clear from compatriot Jess Learmonth and B e r m u d a’s Flora Du f fy ear l y in the run section, before extending her advantage.

Taylor- Brown went on to win by nine seconds f rom Du f fy with Laura Lindemann of Germany in third place.

Taylor-brown said: “I didn’t really know what to expect today.

“I’m grateful to race and I’m a bit shocked at that performance.

“I felt comfortable starting out on the run so I just thought I would go for it and it paid off.”

In the men’s race, Alex Yee was the top- finishing Briton in fifth. Alistair Brownlee was ninth with brother Jonny back in 31st spot.
