Ex-wimbledon champ has Covid- 19

-

World No 2 Simona Halep has announced she has tested positive for coronavirus and is “recovering well from mild symptoms”.

Halep won Wimbledon in 2019 and remains the reigning women’s singles champion after this year’s tournament was postponed because of the pandemic.

The 29-year-old wrote on Twitter: “Hi everyone, I wanted to let you know that I tested positive for Covid-19. I am self-isolating at home and am recovering well from mild symptoms. I feel good . . . we will get through this together”

In announcing she would not play at this year’s US Open – which started at the end of August and finished in mid-september – the Romanian said she was putting “my health at the heart of my decision”.

The 2018 French Open champion was last in action at Roland Garros, where she reached the fourth round of the rearranged tournament before losing to eventual champion Iga Swiatek earlier this month.

Catalans Dragons will resume their Betfred Super League campaign against

Salford tomorrow after receiving a coronavirus all-clear.

The French club’s last two fixtures, against Hull and Warrington, were both cancelled after they reported a spate of positive Covid-19 tests.

A statement from the club read: “Catalans Dragons have received the results of yesterday’s round of squad testing for Covid-19 and all are negative.

“It means the Dragons will play against Salford on Monday at the AJ Bell Stadium.”
