Man, 40, held after toddler dies in flat
A man was arrested yesterday after a two-year-old boy died after suffering serious injuries at an Edinburgh flat.
Emergency services were called to the Muirhouse area of the city at around 9.30am. The toddler found badly hurt could not be saved and died at the scene.
A 40-year-old man was arrested in connection with the death, police said.
Councillor Norman Work, whose Almond ward covers Muirhouse, said: “It’s tragic news and my thoughts go out to the family and all affected.
“An incident like this will hit the local community but I am quite sure people will pull together and support each other.”
One woman who lives nearby in Muirhouse Place West, who did not wish to be named, said: “Police have been here all day and two vans remain parked across the road next to Craigroyston primary school. It’s just awful and quite a lot to take in.
“It’s a quiet area and a decent street and I have lived here for 25 years and had no bother. It’s a terrible thing which has happened and it gives you a shock.”
Chief Inspector David Happs, who is based at the city’s Drylaw police station, said: “Around 9.30am, officers and emergency services were called to an address in the Muirhouse area of Edinburgh where a two-year-old child was found seriously injured. He was pronounced dead at the scene a short time later. A 40-year-old man has been arrested in connection with this incident and inquiries, which are at an early stage, are ongoing.”
He urged anyone with information which could assist with the inquiry to contact police as soon as possible.
