THE BIG QUESTIONS

-

Joe Biden won just over 50% of the vote and Donald Trump 47% in the US Presidential election – who won the other 2-3%? – G

With votes to be counted in some states, Jo Jorgensen of the Libertarian Party has the third highest tally, with 1,847,135 votes. Next is the Green Party’s Howie Hawkins on 388,143 votes.

The best third party performance was in 1992 when Ross Perot (Independent) won 19,743,821 votes.

My dog can make a real racket when he barks at me, telling me to put down my newspaper and take him for a walk. But I doubt he’s the loudest animal – so which holds that title? – P

That is probably the sperm whale, whose communication clicks have been recorded at 230 decibels.

Obviously, the whales call at this level underwater, because if you were to be subjected to that level of noise close up, it would actually kill you!

On dry land, the loudest beast is the aptly-named howler monkey, which has been known to howl at 128 decibels, a noise loud enough to be heard three miles away.

In dogs, the golden retriever is thought to be the loudest barker.

“Sufferin’ succotash!” is the catchphrase of Sylvester the Cat in the Tweety Pie cartoons I so enjoy watching with my children. But what on earth is succotash? – D

Sylvester has been trying to get his paws on Tweety Pie the canary since 1947. The pair even won an Oscar for Best Animated Short Film the following year.

Succotash is a sweetcorn dish made with a variety of beans. Why it’s suffering, I have no idea.
