Was Clem ever reminded of the nutmeg?

-

The Dalglish household was saddened to hear of the death of Ray Clemence.

He was a team-mate at Liverpool, but, more importantly, he and his wife, Vee, were great friends to Marina and I.

When we moved to Liverpool from Glasgow in 1977, they went out of their way to make us feel welcome.

When we were house-hunting in Southport, they insisted we pop in to theirs for a cup of tea and a chat.

On the park, Ray was a brilliant goalkeeper. The medals he won are proof of that.

In season 1978-79, he was sensational. We won the League that year and he only conceded 16 goals in the 42 fixtures, including 28 clean sheets.

Those are truly phenomenal stats, and that was absolutely down to him. With Clem between the sticks, we felt unbeatable.

He also represented England with great distinction.

In 1976, I happened to nutmeg him for Scotland at Hampden Park. We won 2-1.

I was a Celtic player at the time, but the following year I moved to Anfield so we were in the same team.

Was Ray reminded of it? Well, he had no choice!

After he hung up his gloves, he got involved in the media and worked for Radio City, and one of his jobs was to interview the players after the game.

If I’d done anything, I knew Clem would want to speak to me for his listeners.

And his hand would be shaking as he held the microphone!

We used to laugh about that. He loved a giggle and had a great sense of humour.

Ray will be sadly missed. Another one of the greats is no longer with us.
