Penalty miss but Elgin again get better of Binos

-

STIRLING ALB 1 ELGIN CITY 2

Elgin beat Stirling for the fourth time in 2020 to inflict the Binos’ first league defeat of the season and move up to second place in the table.

City had lost their last two league matches, but bounced back with a deserved victory at Forthbank.

Elgin had a great opportunity to take the lead in 39 minutes when Jack Leitch was penalised for handball, but Russell Dingwall’s weak penalty was easily saved by Cammy Binnie.

However, from the corner that followed, Dingwall floated the ball in and central defender Stephen Bronsky scored with a near-post header.

Albion equalised with a freak goal just after half-time when Kurtis Roberts’ cross from wide on the right looped beyond keeper Tom Mchale and into the net.

City were back in front soon after on 51 minutes when young striker Aidan Sopel headed in a Josh Peters cross.

Although Andy Ryan hit the bar for Stirling, the hard-working visitors saw the match out in relative comfort.

QUEEN’S PARK 3 BRECHIN 0

Table-topping Queen’s Park moved ahead of Brechin on five minutes when Jai Quitongo sent a low shot home from the edge of the box.

Queen’s doubled their advantage midway through the first half when Brechin shot-stopper Lewis Mcginn pushed out another Quitongo effort and Bob Mchugh was on hand to head home.

Five minutes into the second half, Brechin player-manager Michael Paton prevented his side going further behind when he headed the ball off the line.

A third for the hosts arrived midway through the second half when a deflection took the ball into the path of Darren Lyon and he sidefooted home.

Mchugh came within inches of grabbing a second goal six minutes from time, but his header struck the bar.

STENHOUSEMUIR 1 ANNAN 2

Despite the game being played at a decent tempo, neither keeper was called into action until the 45th minute when the visitors took the lead through Max Wright when he tucked the ball home from close range.

Stenhousemuir had the best chance prior to that when Mark Mcguigan shot over the bar in the 15th minute after being picked out by Callum Tapping.

In the main, though, both defences had been resolute and the forwards found it hard to get on top.

Annan were unlucky not to double their lead straight after the restart with Wright coming close again.

This was followed by a Kyle Fleming strike from distance that was well saved by Paddy Martin.

Stenhousemuir drew level in the 55th minute when Mark Mcguigan fired home a Botti Biabi cross.

It looked like finishing a draw until Wright popped up once again in the 90th minute to score the winner for Annan.

EDINBURGH CITY 0 STRANRAER 1

With the North Sea wind swirling around Ainslie Park, Stranraer looked to be keener during an untidy opening period and they edged in front midway through the first half,.

Grant Gallagher played a measured pass to Thomas Orr and his low cross from the right was driven home at the far post by Darryl Duffy.

Joao Victoria almost made it 2-0 shortly after, his shot being well saved by Calum Antell.

The City keeper was again called into action to block Duffy’s close-range header just before the break.

Edinburgh sub Gabby Mcgill tested Greg Fleming early in the second half, but the visitors held out for the win.
