Robert’s rocket just Diamond for hosts

-

AIRDRIEONIANS 1 COVE RANGERS 1

A game of two halves saw the sides in second and third place in the table earn a point apiece in this first-ever League encounter.

The first half belonged to visitors Cove, who took the game to their hosts and eventually broke the deadlock in 26 minutes, having threatened before then.

A break upfield from an Airdrieonians attack saw Cove sweep the ball down the righthand side before the visitors top scorer Mitch Megginson sent the ball into the home penalty box for Jamie Masson. He showed great control to send the ball behind keeper Max Currie into the back of the net.

Seven minutes from the interval, a superb Dale Carrick volley was well saved by keeper Stuart Mckenzie to see Cove take their lead to the interval.

After the break, a different Diamonds side showed up and created many chances, with Carrick firing against the bar in 48 minutes.

Then, in 57 minutes, Carrick passed the ball to Thomas Robert on the edge of the box and the Frenchman turned and rocketed the ball into the net for the equaliser.

Substitute Kyle Connell also struck the crossbar with an effort late on, but it was to end with no further scoring.

MONTROSE 0 PARTICK THISTLE 1

Partick Thistle scored what proved to be the winning goal after only six minutes. A Joe Cardle corner was headed goalwards by Ross Docherty and, in the ensuing scramble, Connor Murray forced the ball over the line.

Montrose hit back and, in 12 minutes, Lewis Milne tested keeper Kieran Wright.

Thistle almost stretched their lead in 30 minutes when an angled shot from Docherty was cleared off the line by Kerr Waddell.

Two minutes later, Russell Mclean headed wide for Montrose from an Andy Steeves cross.

In the second half, Steeves should have done better than shoot over, then, at the other end, Shea Gordon headed wide.

The hosts threw everything forward in the closing stages and Graham Webster had a drive tipped over by goalkeeper Wright.

Four minutes from time, Montrose had a big penalty claim waved away when a drive from Cammy Ballantyne struck a hand.

PETERHEAD 0 FORFAR ATHLETIC 1

Forfar Athletic moved off the bottom of League 1 with a hardfought 1-0 win over a wasteful Peterhead at Balmoor.

Despite being under the cosh for the majority of the match, Stuart Malcom’s side claimed their first victory of the campaign courtesy of Bobby Barr’s header on the stroke of half-time.

The Blue Toon passed up several chances to take the lead and, in first-half time-added, they were made to pay the price.

Barr bulleted a header after a cross in from the right beyond the reaches of Rae in the Peterhead goal to break the deadlock.

A backs-to-the-wall job in the second half was required from the visitors and, despite plenty opportunities, Jim Mcinally’s men ultimately couldn’t make their pressure count as they left empty-handed.

With East Fife’s game being postponed, the win puts Forfar up to ninth in the table, while Peterhead lie in seventh.
