THE BIG QUESTIONS

-

Lionel Messi broke Pele’s record of most goals for a single club when he notched his 644th goal for Barcelona this week, but how many did Pele score in total? – D

The number of goals Pele scored in his career is disputed, but officially, he scored 643 goals for Brazilian club Santos in 665 appearances.

He then played for New York Cosmos, where he netted a further 64 times.

As a kid, I used to love reading about the great Victorian explorers such as John Hanning Speke, Richard Burton and Robert Falcon Scott. Now, I wonder, are there any great discoveries still to be made? – F

The Victorian era was a golden age of exploration. Speke was the first European to reach Lake Victoria in Africa, which he correctly identified as a source of the Nile. Burton discovered Lake Tanganyika, and the Antarctic exploits of Scott are well known.

Today, Antarctica is still largely unknown, as is the Amazon Rainforest. However, the greatest unexplored region is the oceans – about

95% of the deep sea remains unseen by human eyes.

I think they are trying to drop a hint because I received no fewer than four deodorants from family. Which has me thinking – what was in the first aerosol can? – J

The aerosol – a colloid of fine solid particles or liquid droplets, in the air or another gas – was invented in 1927 by Erik Rotheim, a Norwegian chemical engineer.

The first aerosols as we know them now contained insect repellant for US troops during the war.
