‘Gutted’ Dyer gives Rogers some support

- By Ewing Grahame SPORT@SUNDAYPOST.COM

Kilmarnock manager Alex Dyer offered sympathy for Danny Rogers, whose lastminute gaffe cost his side two points.

The Ayrshire club looked like they were on course to take six points in just four days until an error of judgment by Rogers gifted Saints a draw they had rarely looked like achieving.

“He’s maybe caught between whether to punch it or catch it,” he said.

“He’s gone to catch it and then his momentum took him back and the ball went over the line.

“I’m gutted for him and the team because they played well during the game.

“The game should have been put to bed by half-time.

“We had enough opportunities and chances to do that. And, once you don’t do that, it gives them a chance to stay in the game.

“They get an opportunity right at the death and it comes right for them and not for us.

“We were comfortable and Danny looked comfortable up until that point. Everything that came his way he handled – until that last little bit and then maybe it just comes down to decision-making.

“I’m not a goalie or a goalie coach so what he should do in that situation only they will know.

“Overall, this season Danny has done really well for us and it’s maybe just a lack of judgment.

“But we have to dust ourselves down and go again next week. We have another tough game against Hamilton and we’ll look to put it right.

“But it’s another game unbeaten – we went five or six games without winning and now it’s four points in a week.”

“We played well for the most part so I’m gutted for the players. The lads worked hard and played well. We just should have put it to bed earlier and not give them the chance. But overall we did OK today.”

Striker Danny Whitehall’s second goal in as many games looks like earning the Englishman a new, extended contract.

“He’s had two full games in the league and scored two goals,” Dyer added.

“He leads the line quite well. He’s still got a lot to learn but he’s done himself no harm.”
