Goodwin: OK, I shout too much, but ref was right

St Mirren manager Jim Goodwin was adamant that Bobby Madden was right to give his side a penalty.

Good win’ steam equalised from the spot against Motherwell and got a draw that looked like it might be beyond them.

New Mother well boss Graham Alexander spoke about noise from the sidelines having an influence in the Buddies being awarded the kick.

There was no attempt from Goodwin to deny he likes being vocal during games but he felt the decision was a correct one.

When told of Alexander’s comments about noise, he said: “Does he mean me?

“I shout too much on the sideline, I know that.

“Bobby Madden is a top referee, hence why he was chosen for the Old Firm game a couple of weeks ago.

“In my opinion, he’s one of the best in the country. I thought he had a decent game.

“If he hasn’t made the right decision on this occasion, I’m sure he will be the first one to hold his hands up.

“I certainly felt Lee Erwin had himself between the ball and the defender. It sounded like the defender kicked through the back of his calf.

“You could hear the boot making contact. At the time, I thought it was a penalty.

“I was pleased to get the penalty that earned us a point. Over the piece, a point was probably fair.”

Goodwin did concede that St Mirren toiled to make an impact on the game during the first 45 minutes.

He added: “I thought in the first half Motherwell were the better team and caused us a number of problems. You felt like their goal was coming.

“We struggled at set- plays with the way Motherwell had set- up and their delivery was really good.

“I was happy to go in 1- 0 down at half- time because we hadn’t played anywhere near what we’re capable of.

“In the second half we asked them to shorten their passing a bit to get Doyle- Hayes and Mcgrath on the ball.

“I thought we were a lot better after the break.

“We’ve only lost two in 16, so it’s a decent point.”

Goodwin was pleased to give new signing Ea monn Brophyh is debut off the bench and hopes to soon give German striker Collin Quaner some action.

He said: “Collin has played at a high level and if he reaches that level again, he’ll probably be too good for us and will get a better opportunity to go somewhere else in the summer.

“Hopefully it works out well for everyone and the big man gets a good move on the back of it.”
