Just how many games do UEFA want?

-

There has been a suggestion that UEFA is in favour of looking into detailed plans for an Atlantic League to be formed.

Clubs in Scotland, such as Rangers, Celtic, Aberdeen, Hearts and Hibs, have all been mentioned as being part of the set-up, along with teams from the likes of Sweden, Denmark, Norway and the Republic of Ireland.

It’s very much at the embryonic stage, and some of the finances available for being involved look to be quite lucrative. That can be seductive.

But I would need to see more detail as, right now, what’s being spouted by UEFA president, Aleksander Ceferin, all seems too flimsy.

Such an innovation requires proper thought, planning and detail.

As it stands, I’m yet to be convinced it’s a good idea.

My main concern is how you fit in yet another tournament to the current

calendar, and the harm that may cause to players.

Honestly, how many tournaments do UEFA want, and what do they think footballers are made of?

We already have extra international games with the increase in the size of the Euros, and the Champions League and Europa League involve more clubs than ever before.

Scheduling at club level is absolutely full. There is hardly a spare midweek.

If this new proposal is to get off the ground, then something would have to give.

They would need to get rid of one of the domestic cup competitions, or reduce the number of league games.

It’s also another potential strain on the pockets of football supporters.

We always need to take them into consideration, and I’m not sure it’s wise to ask them to pay to see even more games of football.

And that’s even after Covid-19 has passed and they’re finally allowed back in numbers.
