Peter is a hard act to follow for Dominic

-

Peter Lawwell’s 17 years as Celtic’s chief executive saw the club win 29 trophies.

That is unlikely to ever be repeated.

Peter has worked hard to back his managers and, more often than not, it worked out very well.

So he, the board, and the various managers, all deserve credit.

This season hasn’t gone to plan. The club were determined to win “The Ten” but that dream is all but over.

Even though Rangers were out of the picture for four years, to win nine-ina-row was still a fantastic achievement.

The important thing now for Celtic is how they move forward, and the new chief executive, Dominic Mckay, will be key to that.

He has never worked in football, but has an impressive CV from his time in Scottish rugby.

He appears to be a very good operator, but he will need a settling-in period, and to be given time by the supporters to make his mark.

It will be hard, if not almost impossible, for Dominic to emulate Peter’s achievements, but it is a challenge that all people in such important positions need to embrace.

It will be interesting to see what he does in terms of staff turnover and recruitment.

He has the credentials to make a success of this job, and the people on the Celtic board who have hired him are an intelligent group.

They will have had some outstanding candidates to choose from, and Dominic will feel privileged and proud that he has been given the green light.

Another man leaving Scottish football is Iain Blair at the SPFL. He was there for more than 22 years.

I dealt with Iain a few times when I was at Celtic in 1999-2000, and he was always very professional and fair.

You can’t ask for more than that, and I wish both him and Peter well in their retirements.
