Robertson left Pittodrie for Ibrox – and returned to punches and spit

David Robertson reckons it would make sense for all parties if Scott Wright’s move from Aberdeen to Rangers was finalised in this transfer window, rather than dragging on.

The midfielder is set to leave Pittodrie for Ibrox in the summer, having penned a pre-contract agreement.

That has infuriated Dons fans, who have taken to social media to express their disgust at seeing another top-team star move to Ibrox.

Robertson (right) made that same switch back in 1991, and went on to become a stalwart of Rangers’ nine-in-arow-winning squad six years later.

And the abuse he received every time he went back to Pittodrie makes him think it would be wiser if Wright left now instead of waiting.

The manager of Indian side, Real Kashmir, said: “It might be better for Aberdeen if they moved Scott on now.

“I know Derek Mcinnes has said he will keep playing him, but I think come the last day of the window, they’ll just get it done.

“I don’t think it’s ever healthy hanging on to a player that you know is going to be moving to a rival in the summer.

“I went through all that, so I can relate to the grief Scott is getting.

“I was just fortunate there was no social media in those days!

“I was 22 when I moved to Rangers and didn’t think anyone would be that bothered that I had left. Obviously, I was proved wrong.

“You do get a lot of stick, particularly when you go back. And maybe Scott will be grateful there are no crowds there at the moment.

“When I went back to play at Pittodrie, it was pretty hostile.

“A couple of times I got punched in the back when I was taking a throw-in.

“After one of the games, I actually got called by the police. They had someone in custody and asked if I wanted to press charges.

“But I never bothered. You would get spat on down the side of the South Stand. It wasn’t very nice at all.

“It never got any easier. It was the same reception for six years any time I played at Pittodrie after that.

“So it’s something Scott will need to prepare himself for if fans are back in by then.” Robertson has a new book coming out, called The Quiet Man Roars.

And he reckons it’s a perfect title after coming out of his shell in recent years.

He added: “I went back to Rangers one time to do some hospitality.

“My former team-mate, Alan Mclaren, was there, and told me some of the boys had been talking about the documentary I had done in India.

“He asked them if it was a silent movie!

“As a player,i was dead quiet, and never said much.

“But I’m a lot more confident in myself as a coach than when I played, so it’s an appropriate title for the book.”
