Goalden boy Gibby just gets better, says Al

Queen of the South manager Allan Johnston hailed the “unbelievable finish” that secured a superb 3- 2 win over Dundee.

Willie Gibson ran almost the length of Dens Park before lashing the ball into the net from 25 yards.

That made the scoreline 3-1 to Queens and they were then able to withstand the pressure after Jordan Marshall grabbed one back for the hosts with eight minutes to go.

The result moved into fourth spot in the Championship, jumping ahead of the Dark Blues.

Johnston said: “If there was going to be a goal to win a game of football, that was it today.

“It was an unbelievable finish from Willie Gibson.

“He has been fantastic for us this year. “Even at his age, the way he trains is a credit to him.

“He was everywhere today but it was a real team performance because you could see in the second half that Dundee had a point to prove.

“They have really good players but we defended really well and made it difficult for them.

“We are delighted and we have shown we can compete with the top teams.

“We just have to keep the momentum going.”

Dundee manager James Mcpake was dismayed by the way his team started.

They have had a few games postponed but he wasn’t accepting any excuse for what he labelled a “criminal” opening to the match.

Mcpake said: “We were up against it after our first-half performance.

“It was embarrassingly poor. That is what cost us the game.

“To lose a goal after 30 seconds or whatever is criminal.

“You take knocks in football and it’s then about how you get back up but today we never did that.”

He was then asked if they were a bit rusty because of the lack of game time.

He replied: “We are not going to make excuses for that.

“We have trained hard and prepared. “I’m not giving myself or any of them a get-out by saying we were rusty.

“If you play like that against any team, then...

“We were sloppy and couldn’t do the basics right.

“It was basic, basic stuff.”
