Saintand Greavsiemade mechangemy pre-matchmeal

-

I was saddened to hear of the passing of Jimmy Greaves last weekend.

Off the park, he was an absolute gentleman. On the park, he was a fantastic finisher.

All during his career, for clubs and country, he really enjoyed getting into the penalty-box, and being given the opportunity to score goals.

Some people are like a jigsaw, and fall to pieces in the box when they have a chance in front of goal.

But not Jimmy.

No, Jimmy was so relaxed, he could have been on a sun-lounger, with a pillow behind his head, when given a glimpse of goal!

He was rightly revered by footballers and supporters across the world.

When he hung up his boots, Jimmy’s personality and humour allowed him to make the switch to television, and he was the perfect partner for Ian St John, who sadly also passed away earlier this year.

I loved watching the Saint & Greavsie show on a Saturday lunchtime. It was essential viewing, and became iconic.

Every footballer, myself included, used to build their pre-match routine around the show.

Between Football Focus on the BBC, and Ian and Jimmy’s programme on ITV, they were not to be missed.

So much so, I changed my pre-match meal from fillet steak to scrambled eggs and toast to make sure I could watch their show.

On away trips, the fillet took too long to cook, and I wanted to be back in my hotel room to watch the programme before the bus left for the stadium.

Eggs were much quicker!

It was good to watch their interviews, and listen to their humour.

Jimmy will be sadly missed, and the thoughts of everyone in the Dalglish household are with the Greaves family.
