This Arc field packed with potential to grab the Paris riches

- By Reg Moore sport@sundaypost.com

Paris Longchamp parades the 100th running of Europe’s richest race – the Prix de l’arc de Triomphe – this afternoon, with a typically international flavour.

Runners from Japan, Germany, France, England and Ireland, compete for a first prize of £2.55 million, with even the fifth home scooping £127,000.

In the absence of a wonder horse this year, punters are faced with a field packed with potential winners and bookies needed the draw to find a favourite.

Maestro Dermot Weld’s Tarnawa has emerged at the top of the market from stall three, while Adayar, the other early jointfavourite, is boxed in 11.

The mile-and-a-half of the Irish Champion Stakes was just short enough at 10 furlongs for Tarnawa and he just failed to collar St Mark’s Basilica.

Aidan O’ Brien’s suggestion that the three-year-old might be the best he’s ever had at Ballydoyle, is compelling evidence of Tarnawa’s chance.

Adayar’s Epsom Derby victory could hardly have been

more impressive, as the Godolphin colt powered away to beat Mishriff one-and-threequarter lengths.

He has also been chosen by stable rider William Buick, ahead of Hurricane Lane, after his Group One triumph in the King George at Ascot.

His wide draw is no help but may not be race-losing. For the Epsom hero has pace, acceleration and will run right through the winning line.
