Frank’s latest task is to stay on the right side of the police
Scotland’s most-travelled manager is now helping the long arm of the law in Africa.
Frank Nuttall recently signed a one- year deal to coach Police FC in the Rwanda Premier League.
The club was founded in 2000 by the Rwanda National Police.
Nuttall’s globetrotting had been disrupted by the Coronavirus pandemic, but he is now back in business.
Last year he was in charge of Township Rollers in Botswana, leading them to the final of the Mascom 8 Cup, where they lost in a penalty shoot-out.
The 53- year- old had no option but to return to Scotland when Covid19 forced the suspension of football.
But earlier this year, he spent a four- month spell coaching Saint George FC in Ethiopia.
Different cultures and dangerous environments have never stopped the Scot taking on a challenge.
Over the last 30 years, he has worked in places such as China, Qatar, No r t h Ko re a , Egypt, Kenya, Ghana and Sudan.
He won back- to- back titles with Gor Mahia in Kenya, and assisted Alex Mcleish during his stint with the Egyptian outfit, Zamalek.
This latest job is another fascinating challenge.
It’s not unusual for club owners to address the players before a season gets u n d e r w a y, but Nuttall’s men were given instructions by a leading police official during their pre-season training camp.
Jeanne Chantal Ujeneza, Rwanda’s Deputy Inspector General of Police, outlined what they expected from the players.
She said: “Rwanda National Police expects the best from you, and my being here today is to express the support of the leadership in your training preparations.
“The support of any kind that RNP continues to extend to you should be translated into success, and that starts now with your focus on training.”
Nuttall gave a diplomatic response to the police orders for a successful season, and praised the resources he was given to work with.
He said: “I have not been with this team for long, but I can happily say that what we requested to
facilitate our training and other preparations, was delivered and in time.
“We have that debt to deliver.”
Nuttall got off to a winning start with a 2- 1 win in a friendly against Musanze FC.
Former goalkeeper and manager, Billy Lamont, has died at the age of 85.
Lamont, who had laterally been living in Spain, spent most of his playing career with Hamilton Accies.
He briefly managed the Douglas Park club before bossing East Stirling, Du m b a r t o n (twice), Partick Thistle ( twice) and Alloa.
The highlight of his managerial career was winning promotion to the top flight with Falkirk in 1986.
