Biscuit Cafe

Even when taking in the beautiful sites of Scotland, Scone Spy always has one thought burning at the back of their mind: is this wonderfully scenic location also home to the perfect scone?

Luckily, on my recent visit to the very pretty but also historically significant village of Culross near Dunfermline, the answer was a resounding yes.

Known in ancient times as the hangout place of St Enoch, St Mungo and St Serf and more recently as a shooting location for hit television show Outlander, Culross turned out to be home to another legend in the baking: Biscuit Cafe.

Nestled between Culross Palace and the village’s visitor centre, Biscuit Cafe is a roomy yet cosy eatery with a charming outdoor seating area in its garden. The cafe is dog friendly, and I enjoyed a small parade of canine characters of all shapes and sizes as I waited for my scone to arrive.

I decided to put Biscuit Cafe to the test and opted for the hardest-to-perfect scone of all: the plain scone. When there is no fruity business, there is nowhere for a baker to hide and you can find out the true measure of their muffin.

Biscuit Cafe’s bake more than rose to the challenge however, and their plain scone was rustic and crumbly on the outside and soft and fluffy on the inside. Heaped with generous helpings of heavy cream and strawberry jam, there was no need to sugarcoat it, Biscuit Cafe’s plain scone was by no means boring, in fact, quite the opposite, it was downright delicious.

For the more adventurous sconeseekers, don’t fear. Biscuit Cafe also had fruit scones on offer as well as a selection of other tasty bakes and cakes to choose from.

No crumb was left unturned and by the time I payed the very reasonable bill I was fit to burst, but the delights of Biscuit Cafe were not over for this Scone Spy yet.

The cafe sits over Culross Pottery and Gallery, which showcases amazing art, pottery and jewellery created by local artists, which I loved and perused at leisure.

Whether dough or clay, the bakes in Culross are true works of art.
