Contrasting fortunes for Scotland heroes

-

After theirworld Cup heroics, it was back to the day job for Scotland’s Anglos yesterday.

John Mcginn started pretty much where he left off by scoring for Aston Villa to put them two up at home towolves after Danny Ings had opened the scoring.

But the visitors mounted an astonishing comeback to take the points with three goals in the final 10 minutes.

Romain Saiss and Conor Coady levelled for Bruno Lage’s side and Ruben Neves’ deflected free-kick snatched a 3-2 victory in added time.

Grant Hanley and Kenny Mclean played the full 90 minutes for Norwich City as they drew 0-0 at home to Brighton. But national talisman, Billy Gilmour, again did not get the chance to come off the bench.

Scott Mctominay was an 80th- minute substitute for Manchester United, and he got a bird’s-eye view of a remarkable finale to their clash at Leicester City.

The Foxes brought United’s record away run to a crashing end as Jamie Vardy and Patson Daka scored late to condemn the Red Devils to

a first away league defeat since January, 2020.

Theendofthat29-matchunbeatenruncame after City cancelled out Mason Greenwood’s stunner with a similarly- impressive effort through Youri Tielemans.

Former Leicester man Harry Maguire was at fault for the leveller, and David De Gea had to produce some key saves, before Caglar Soyuncu scored what looked to be a late winner.

But there was still plenty of drama. Substitute Marcus Rashford – making his first appearance since the Euro 2020 Final – levelled for United, only for Leicester to score straight from the restart through Vardy, then Daka turned home a corner in stoppage-time to add some gloss.

Liam Cooper started for Leeds United, and was joined on the pitch after an hour by Stuart Armstrong, and he helped hosts Southampton to the three points with Armando Broja’s goal.

Scotland captain, Andy Robertson was subbed after 64 minutes. But by then Liverpool were already four up at Watford. Roberto

Firmino struck a hat-trick and Mohamed Salah scored for the eighth consecutive game on Claudio Ranieri’s Premier League return.

Sadio Mane opened the scoring with his 100th Premier League goal, then Firmino doubled the Reds’ lead just before half-time with a tap-in before adding his second from close range seven minutes after the break.

Salah provided Liverpool’s fourth with another moment of individual brilliance in the box before curling the ball into the far corner, before Firmino completed his treble, and a 5-0 win, in added time.

At the top, Edouard Mendy’s stunning string of saves ensured Chelsea climbed back to the top, with Ben Chilwell’s strike sealing a nervy 1-0 win at luckless Brentford.

Bernardo Silva and Kevin De Bruyne were on target as champions Manchester City claimed a battling 2-0 home win over Burnley.

In the Championship, Lyndon Dykes equalised for QPR after being a half-time sub, but his side were thrashed 4-1 at Fulham, while Ryan Christie set up Bournemouth’s second in their 2-0 win at Bristol City.
