Gr-eight day to break a record

PARTICK THISTLE 0

Partick Thistle made it eight matches undefeated in the Championship after a hardfought stalemate at Palmerston.

And Jags assistant Neil Scally hailed his side’s defence once again for keeping their eighth clean sheet on the bounce and setting a new club record in the process

He said: “We have set up a new club record of eight games in a row with eight clean sheets. But we would rather win 3-2 and get the points.

“Our keeper Jamie Sneddon’s made a fantastic save before half time to tip the ball on to the bar.

“The clean sheets start from the hard work up front to the back.”

It was a lively start to proceedings at Dumfries with both sides having early chances.

Partick forward Zak Rudden really should’ve given the visitors the lead on 10 minutes when he was gifted a shot following a Willie Gibson slip.

However, Queens stopper Sol Brynn was there to save the day with a fantastic stop with his feet.

Queens broke up the other end immediately through Ruari Paton who managed to cut inside of his marker but his curling effort was stopped by Sneddon.

The Doonhamers were inches away from the opener on the half-hour mark when livewire Lee Connelly caught Sneddon by surprise with a first time 25-yard shot from an acute angle. His effort looked destined for the net but cracked off the inside of the left-hand post.

Connelly couldn’t believe his bad luck on the stroke of halftime when his terrific shot from 15 yards was palmed onto the woodwork by Sneddon.

Thistle were in control of the early exchanges of the second period. Kyle Turner did well to manufacture a shot from 25 yards but just glanced wide.

Then a superb Scott Tiffoney delivery found substitute Brian Graham inside the six-yard box, but somehow the hitman fluffed his lines and ballooned over.

Graham definitely left his shooting boots in Glasgow as he again spurred another glorious opportunity moments later.

The match came alive in the final stages and Queens had defender Alex Cooper to thank after he sensationally blocked a shot from Ross Maciver to secure a point.

Queens remain at the foot of the table on goal difference and gaffer Allan Johnston said: “It was terrible conditions and very difficult to get the ball down.

“In the first half we had a couple of chances and Lee Connelly was very unlucky with his two shots off the bar and post.

“But it is a good point against one of the better teams in the league. You obviously want to win your home games and get the three points.”
