After being stuck in the UK for the best part of two years, many of us will be ready to visit somewhere new.

Although the sun season is over in many parts of Europe, there are picturesqu­e Christmas markets that are well worth a visit instead. Campervan rental Paulcamper has researched the most picturesqu­e Christmas markets in Europe. Here is its top five...

Wrocław

The historic Polish city’s Christmas market takes place across the Market Square, Salt Square, Świdnicka Street and Oławska Street.

There will be plenty of opportunit­ies to try local cuisine, like Oscypek, a smoked cheese from the Polish mountains you won’t find anywhere else. Visitors will also be able to find plenty of sausages, bigos, skewers and potato pancakes. Open until December 31.

Oslo

Jul i Vinterland takes place by the Spikersupp­a skating rink on Karl Johans gate, a stone’s throw from the Royal Palace. The market features Norwegian food stalls and family attraction­s including Ferris wheel. Until Jan 2.

Zagreb

The Croatian capital’s Advent offers an entertaini­ng, festive-flavoured cultural programme. The main square, Zrinjevac, Europski trg and the Fuliranje alley of food and drink stalls are the core venues. The Christmas market has often been voted the best in Europe. Amazing atmosphere every year. Until January 7.

Lisbon

Star attraction­s include the Ferris wheel and ice rink, while the charming Christmas village which offers plenty of activities for little ones – including, of course, getting their picture taken with Santa Claus. Handmade goods for sale. Until January 2.

Prague

Expect brightly decorated wooden huts stocked with handicraft­s and traditiona­l Christmas treats. Ceramics, jewellery, embroidere­d lace, wooden toys, Christmas tree ornaments, and puppets and dolls dressed in traditiona­l costume – all make perfect souvenirs or gifts for loved ones back home. Until January 6.
