Traffic? You’ll see more sheep than other cars

-

The A708, from Selkirk to Moffat, is one of Scotland’s loneliest roads. with the stretch around Longformacus with moors and rivers just one unspoiled beauty. world and with an average of two cars a day, you’re most likely to have it all to yourself.

The south is often forgotten about in the debate surrounding Scotland’s best roads, but the hills and lochs make this route, which begins in Selkirk, one of the most stunning drives in the country – and blissfully quiet.

The landscape has been left virtually as nature intended.

And the breathtaking views are all yours . . . because it’s unlikely there will be anyone else around to see them.

The beauty of the Grey Mare’s Tail waterfall is particularly impressive.

The name comes from the cost of building this road . . . it was so expensive, people said it must be made of gold! And this stretch on the east coast of Harris certainly feels like a hidden gem.

Mile after mile of rugged, windswept terrain surrounds you on every side of this extremely narrow route. In fact, the lunar landscapes were featured as Jupiter in 2001: A Space Odyssey!

There are passing places, but you’re more likely to see an otter or a seal than another car. THE peacefulness of these roads comes as little consolation to the thousands of drivers facing commutes in some of Scotland’s worst congestion hotspots.

Edinburgh was recently named as one of the worst cities in the UK for road congestion .

The capital ranked 12th in the top 20 British cities in a new survey of traffic conditions.

A 5.3-mile stretch of the A8 from Princes Street to Maybury Road was the most congested road.

Drivers spent an average of 43 hours in traffic jams on the A8 last year.

Glasgow’s A739 at the Clyde Tunnel, the city’s M8 and Edinburgh’s A90 Ring Road at Corstorphine also ranked high for terrible traffic. AVERAGE speed limits across the UK have fallen as a result of congestion on the roads.

The average speed on UK roads has been in decline since March 2012, with the rise in traffic being linked to a growing economy.

Motorists have been experiencing a slower and slower start to their working days as the roads get busier, meaning the network each morning is under real strain in certain locations.
