Inferno destroys primary school

-

A FEROCIOUS blaze ripped through a derelict school in Forfar, Angus, last night, prompting a major emergency services operation.

The fire engulfed the old Wellbrae Primary just before 7pm, with nearby homes having to be evacuated.

Six appliances had to be deployed by the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service to tackle the blaze, with aerial pumps also being sent to the scene.

Hundreds of people lined the streets to watch the dramatic blaze which lit up the night sky.

The 135-year-old C-listed primary has lain empty since 2008 when it was closed as part of the local council’s schools improvement programme.

It’s been the subject of housing conversion plans and part of it was also used as a community church facility.
