“Sometimes you have to fall to wake up better. I think what happened against Monchengla­dbach will make us better in the long run,” he said.

“Two mistakes cost us the game so it is all about learning.

“Otherwise I think we did everything well, apart from take our chances.

“At this level you can’t afford to be like that – if you don’t score when the chances come along then the other team is going to punish you.

“This is football at the top level and it’s absolutely critical that you make the most of your opportunit­ies.

“We have to take it game by game. Wednesday is gone and now we have to focus on the semi-final and make sure we achieve the positive result we are looking for there.”
