Ash has no runners-up doubts

ASH TAYLOR believes Aberdeen have proved their doubters wrong after reclaiming second place from Rangers.

The Dons languished seven points behind the Gers at Christmas after a dodgy spell in December.

Their festive woes were sparked by defeat to Celtic in the League Cup Final.

But after a stunning 10-point swing in Aberdeen’s favour was capped by Wednesday night’s mauling of Motherwell, Taylor is focused on extending their advantage.

“It’s very important to finish second,” said the Dons defender.

“Celtic are away with it at the moment, so if second is the highest we can finish, then that’s what we want to do.

“I’ve finished second the two years I’ve been here and I want to keep that going. I want to do as well for the club as I can.

“The other night was our game in hand so it was important we capitalised on it and put our foot down in the race for second.

“It was important to do that and get ahead of the teams around us.

“I’m sure we had a couple of games after the League Cup final where people were questioning us.

“But in-house we look after ourselves. We know what we’ve got in the team and we know what we’re capable of.

“If we win on Sunday it opens up a bigger gap before Rangers’ game kicks off.

“We just have to go to Kilmarnock today and make sure we get a win.

“It was disappointing to be in the position of being behind Rangers but there was never any panic – there never is,” he said. “We can go on runs. We’ve shown that recently.

“We’ve got our focus, we know what we want to achieve and we’re experienced enough not to panic.

“But there are plenty of games still to play and we need to keep picking up wins.”
