Brady ‘lured youngsters to his cell’

A FORMER prison chief has revealed Ian Brady liked to surround himself with young prisoners – luring them to his cell with offers of tobacco.

Assistant governor Fr John Morrison – who later became a priest based in Edinburgh – said Brady would chat to youngsters while in Wormwood Scrubs hospital wing.

The 80-year-old said: “I was an assistant governor in Wormwood Scrubs when Ian Brady was in the hospital wing in 1976.

“He showed no interest in anyone, except young prisoners in hospital with him.

“They were housed in cells which were called rooms because it was the hospital wing.

“He rarely spoke to the staff and the other prisoners shunned him.

“However, he would call the youngest prisoners over to his cell offering tobacco

jboyle@sundaypost.com and start talking to them. They would gather round to speak to him mainly for the kudos of meeting such a notorious prisoner.

“His door would be open but the bars locked throughout this.

“This was for his own protection as he was hated by the other prisoners and many were desperate to kill or maim him.

“I have to add to that he was closely watched at all times.

“This was a man who had no remorse at all for his victims or their grieving families.

“He cared nothing for what he put any family through.”
