Murray’s momentum may carry

-

ANDY MURRAY is banking on a Friday night revival to boost his chances of retaining his Wimbledon title, and to boost the rest of the season.

Murray looked all set to be taken to a fifth and deciding set against Fabio Fognini on Centre Court when he trailed the Italian 5-2 in the fourth set last Friday.

But then the Scot summoned up that fighting spirit that has been seen so many times down the years to reel off five straight games and win in four sets, setting up a fourth round meeting tomorrow against unseeded Benoit Paire.

Murray has only played the Frenchman once, but he dug out a three-set win in Monte Carlo last year having been a set and a double-break of serve down.

He credits that turn around against

“But I said that it could turn out to be a really important match.

“The next day I beat Milos Raonic to two and zero and then had a great match with Rafa Nadal in the semis, even though I lost.

“Sometimes it only takes one or two matches to start feeling good about yourself to gain confidence.

“After Monte Carlo, I felt way, way better about my game and obviously I ended up having a great season after that.

“I hope the match tomorrow has the same impact but I hope I play better than I did that day.”

Murray will also hope to extend his incredible winning streak over French players which currently stands at 25 matches stretching back over two years.

The 30-year-old now faces a player in Paire, who is in the last-16 at Wimbledon
