CELTIC fell foul of UEFA in midweek for, amongst other things, carrying a sponsors’ logo on their substitutes’ bibs.

Forty-two years ago, they took drastic measures to avoid being brought to book by the European game’s rulers.

For years, Celtic had played with the players’ numbers on their shorts rather than the back of their jerseys.

But when UEFA ruled that was no longer enough, the Parkhead club had to go against tradition.

While numbers remained on shorts, they were also put on the back of the Hoops, black figures on a large white square which was as effective as it was sore on the eyes.

They were first worn in a CupWinners’ Cup tie against Boavista. And the Portuguese strip really was a sight for sore eyes!
