It only took me 77 years to visit Blackpool. Now I can’t stay away
Agnes, 84, enjoys fun at tower resort three times a year
Blackpool remains a favourite holiday destination for thousands of Scots.
Yet it took Agnes Griffith 77 years to visit the famous seaside resort – now she can’t get enough of the place.
The 84- year- old grandmother only visited the Vegas of the North for the first time seven years ago but it’s quickly become her home from home.
She and little sister Margaret, who is 81, visit the town three or four times a year and are on first- name terms with staff at the promenade hotel, the Royal Seabank, where they stay each time.
The sisters, from Hamilton, Lanarkshire, travel down by bus in the spr i ng, l ate summer and Christmas.
“The first time I visited was seven years ago, with my brother and grandson, and I thought it was great,” mum-of-two Agnes said.
“My sister has been joining me since.
“When I was young we went to places like Largs or Rothesay on holiday, rather than Blackpool, and then I lived in Australia for 26 years. I came home about 12 years ago.”
The sisters can’t keep away from the holiday hotspot because, says Agnes, it has so many attractions.
She added: “We’ve done lots since we started visiting, like the tower and its ballroom, the waxworks, and we enjoy going to places like St Annes and Cleveleys. Cleveleys is my favourite part of the trip – it has lovely shops and some nice cafes.”
Last year, 13 million Brits chose Blackpool as their No 1 holiday destination and a new six- part documentary series, Bargain-Loving Brits In Blackpool, follows the holidaymakers and business owners of the resort.
Agnes and Margaret were approached by the film- makers to take part and feature in the opening episode, which is on Channel 5 at 8pm on Thursday.
