Fife leads dramatic Gunners fightback to crush Treviso

- By David Kelso SPORT@SUNDAYPOST.COM

Dougie Fife grabbed a quickfire try-double to stave off another Pro14 disaster for Edinburgh.

Treviso had been on course to grind out their second league win of the campaign against the capital men.

But danger man Dougie boosted his Scotland recall hopes by spearheading the stunning fightback.

The opening exchanges had been dismal for the hosts.

First, their hooker Luca Bigi was forced off injured – and within 60 seconds Edinburgh surged ahead.

A flowing move was expertly executed before scrum-half Sam Hidalgo-Clyne provided the accurate finish.

Jason Tovey slotted the simple conversion.

The rattled home brigade responded by mounting a powerful raid, but the good work was spoiled by a needless knock-on.

Gunners grabbed back the momentum with Phil Burleigh claiming a second score – only for the ref to rule a forward nudge at a crucial moment.

Then Tovey pulled a penalty bid wide of the near post.

The visitors continued to dominate possession and territory, however at in the approach to the interval Treviso’s defence was tight.

But they were reduced to 14 when Francesco Minto was yellow carded for a high challenge.

Despite the setback, they narrowed the gap with an Ian McKinley penalty.

And he repeated the feat almost immediately to set up a tense second half.

Edinburgh were put firmly on the back foot in the 55th minute as Treviso carved out a touchdown.

Angelo Esposito darted over in the wake of a slick handling sequence – McKinley turning it into a seven-pointer.

But the Gunners instantly clicked back into gear with Blair Kinghorn’s break creating the time and space for Fife to score.

Tovey’s strike edged them back in front – and he banged over a penalty to give more breathing space.

Then came Fife’s second moment of magic that killed off Treviso – Tovey finding the target.
