Restaurant REVIEW
Pizza Posto, 16 nicolson st, Edinburgh
1 Location
A 15-minute walk from the east end of Princes Street. Opposite the Festival Theatre, so perfect for a takeaway or pre-show snack or meal.
2 first impressions
Busy, buzzy and friendly, we were warmly welcomed and, even though we hadn’t booked, were immediately shown to a table on the ground floor. This was a good spot as we could view the chefs and the huge clay ovens, and see our fresh pizzas being made.
3 service
From the friendly staff, and their recommendations, to the super-speedy delivery of our fresh pizzas, this was superb service with a smile. We needn’t have worried about missing the start of our theatre show, we were eating our meal within eight minutes of sitting down.
4 menu
Nice selection of traditional Italian starters, sides, salads and sharing platters alongside a choice of traditional “as they do in Naples” pizzas. Neopolitanstyle uses fresh and simple ingredients cooked quickly to lock in flavour. Parma ham, mushroom, Tuscan sausage, spicy salami, steak, rocket, fresh chillies, broccoli and grilled veg all feature.
5 taste
No frills, just excellent, fresh food served hot and bursting with flavour. We ordered mozzarella and tomato, as well as a spicy Italian salami. The balance of flavours and textures exceeded expectations. Bases were thin and soft with the natural flavours of tomato and olive oil. Crusts were light and crunchy with unique, smokeypizza-oven taste. Top notch.
6 price
Fantastic value for the quality. Just £15 for two huge pizzas and drinks in the centre of Edinburgh! We wished we’d had time for starters and sweets. Even a beer is only £3.
7 ambience
Bright, modern interior with lovely laid-back atmosphere makes this an everyman choice.
8 something special
Lovely puds and cocktails – we almost sobbed at having to miss out on banana calzone and the chocolate fudge Cake Of The Day.
9 toilets
Basic but clean and tidy.
10 verdict
No fuss, authentic Italian food. Superb. 17/20
