Ajer: Nobody will be taking the Dons lightly

Form would point to Aberdeen being the ideal opponent for Celtic to face today off the back of their European disappointment.

The Hoops have won all eight games between the sides since Brendan Rodgers became manager, topping up last season’s league clean sweep with victories in the League and Scottish Cup Finals.

It has been the same story this year, too, with the champions netting six times to no reply in their wins home and away.

Yet, while acknowledging the statistic, former Killie loan- signing, defender Kristoffer Ajer, takes only small comfort from it, pointing out the Dons have stayed as one of Celtic’s leading challengers for a reason.

“It is a big game for us. It is a big game for Aberdeen, too,” he said.

“They are one of the teams up at the top of the table and as such will see this as a chance to cut our lead.

“We have a great record against them, having won the matches in Glasgow and at Aberdeen so far.

“And, although I was not part of it, because I was on loan with Kilmarnock, I know, of course, that we also came out on top in the games against them last season as well.

“So it is a good run, one that we will be looking to continue when we go to Pittodrie.

“At the same time there is no doubt they will be up for the match.

“They have done really well this season with their form very consistent throughout the season so far.

“They will be playing in front of their fans so it will be a tough game.

“We know from the Scottish Cup Final last season how much of a threat they can be so we will have to be at our best.”

With several of Celtic’s player turning in a tired performance in the Krestovsky Stadium on Thursday night, changes are expected, a prospect Ajer is relaxed about.

“We have a fantastic squad, so the manager has plenty of options open to him, with the new arrivals such as Charly Musonda having looked good and fresh in training.”
