Leighton leaves it late to deny Raith victory

-

The home side swept forward from the start and Euan Murray was not far away with a shot.

Raith’s Liam Buchanan was unlucky not to net late in the first half when his header struck Hutton and then the bar.

Skipper Jason Thomson put Raith in front two minutes from half-time, connecting with Lewis Vaughan’s corner.

Arbroath were level after 62 minutes when Ryan Wallace scored from a penalty after some pushing in the area.

Raith moved back in front after 74 minutes when another Vaughan corner found Willis Furtado and he blazed the ball into the roof of the net.

But Mcintosh denied them victory when his shot beat Lennox with the aid of a deflection with just two minutes left.

It took 21 minutes for Ayr to create their first chance when Declan Mcdaid cut inside and fired over from Mark Kerr’s through pass.

Jordan Mcgregor went close to giving the Diamonds the lead eight minutes before the break when he met a Tom Fry free-kick right in front of goal, but lifted the ball over.

Craig Moore wasted a good chance just on half-time when he took a poor first touch on Steven Bell’s pass and allowed Rohan Ferguson, who had raced off his line, to make a good save.

Ayr’s pressure had to pay off and it did on 50 minutes when Andy Geggan forced home a Mcdaid cross. This goal meant Ayr became the first team in Britain to score 100 goals this season.

The game was wrapped up with nine minutes to go when Mcgregor was penalised for hand ball and Lawrence Shankland scored from the resultant penalty.

Shankland had the last word with a great solo effort for 3-0.

The kick-off was delayed as Forfar had brought the wrong kit.

However, the Loons were in the pink when they turned defence into attack to tremendous effect on four minutes. Goalkeeper Marc Mccallum’s simple punt up the park released Dale Hilson in behind the home defence and he lobbed home from 18 yards.

A leveller came 11 minutes from halftime when Sean Burns curled over a freekick and Adam Cummins sent a thunderous header into the net.

Queen’s took the lead on 52 minutes when the visiting defence failed to deal with an Anton Brady lofted ball and Daniel Nimmo headed down to Aidan Keena, who drilled in.

Forfar’s Eddie Malone was dismissed when he picked up his second booking 17 minutes from time.

The Loons shrugged that off, though, to level on 75 minutes with a terrific curling Dylan Easton free-kick.

The visitors started well and Alan Trouten should have done better when a loose ball broke to him six yards from goal. He got his shot away, but screwed wide.

Rovers certainly impressed in the opening exchanges and Trouten was again at the heart of things when he collected Joao Victoria’s defence splitting pass and scampered clear on goal.

East Fife keeper Ben Mackenzie impressed though, and was quick off his line to snuff out the danger.

They were made to suffer for the misses when the Fifers took the lead shortly before the 15-minute mark when Aaron Dunsmore raced clear inside the Rovers half and casually slotted beyond Kieran Wright.

It wasn’t long before they were two goals up with Chris Duggan peeling off his marker to meet a Scott Linton delivery on the volley, giving the overworked Wright no chance.

Pat Slattery should have netted the third in the second half when he raced in at the back post to meet a Dunsmore delivery but volleyed well wide.

Stranraer had threatened early doors with Ryan Thomson directing Lyon’s corner towards goal. However, Callum Crane was in the right place at the right time to nod clear on the goal line.

The opening goal came right on the half-time whistle, with Ross Lyon netting his first senior goal when he cut in from the right and squeezing the ball through Neil Parry at the near post.

After the break, Alloa’s Jon Robertson directed a close-range header straight at keeper Max Currie, then Kris Renton had the ball in the net 10 minutes after the restart but it was ruled out.

The Stranraer No. 1 also had to be on his toes to hold on to Jordan Kirkpatrick’s fierce free-kick.

Visiting sub Ross Stewart sent one inches past the post, before firing across the goal and wide of the same upright late on.
