Second sex scandal for crisis-hit Oxfam
Oxfam has been hit by another sex scandal in Haiti.
An internal report has revealed that a senior employee was kept in the country for more than a year after claims of sexual misconduct.
The charity – which was rocked last month by claims senior staff including Roland van Hauwermeiren used prostitutes in Haiti – is accused of attempting to “contain” the sexual harassment allegations against Raphael Mutiku.
He was an aid worker who led the installation of water supplies in Haiti.
Mr Mutiku, a Kenyan in his 40s, was given a final warning about his conduct in June 2010 but he was later accused of paying young women for sex at his Oxfam accommodation six months later.
He was eventually dismissed in 2011.
The final written warning was given to Mr Mutiku after female colleagues made sexual harassment claims.
However, he is then reported to have paid young women for sex.
Yesterday it was reported Mutiku’s line manager, Andy Bastable, wrote in an Oxfam document in 2010: “I’m not judging Raph.
“He has a desire that seemingly needs to be filled... there is no law within Oxfam that prohibits using prostitutes.”
