How nice to add a little touch of warmth on a freezing morning

- Francis Gay

The day had barely started, but I worried he might have been sitting on the snow-covered bench all night.

He wore several layers of ragged clothing. When I asked if he was alright, he replied that he was just watching the world go by. I commented on the cold.

He said, “Well, maybe it’s just me being nostalgic…” and started talking about winters from his childhood.

I joined in his nostalgia and we chatted happily for 20 minutes. I introduced myself, asked his name, and told him it was a pleasure to meet him.

He took a deep breath, and said: “Well, no one has said that for a long time.” Then he smiled and added: “But now someone has.”

I waved goodbye with no idea what our meeting had meant to him, but glad to have added a little warmth to a freezing morning.
