Just who will Big Eck give the armband to?

- By Danny Stewart sport@sundaypost.com

Alex Mcleish has been coy about who’ll be his Scotland captain.

Scott Brown has retired, and Darren Fletcher isn’t in the squad, so there’s a vacancy for the games against Costa Rica and Hungary.

Craig Brown, one of Mcleish’s predecessors as national boss, believes he should go for youth.

“There is not a Gary Mcallister or a Billy Bremner out there,” he said.

“Look at the team we had when we went to the World Cup in Mexico in 1986.

“The back four was Richard Gough, Alex Mcleish, Willie Miller and Maurice Malpas.

“In midfield, there was Roy Aitken – a captain if ever you saw one – Graeme Souness and Paul Mcstay.

“We had a team of captains. Now we have a team of good journeymen, but no dominant players.

“But I do think John Mcginn is a potential captain of the team.

“And Brendan Rodgers thinks Kieran Tierney is a potential captain of the team.

‘‘They are 23 and 20 years old respectively, but you don’t need to be older than that to be captain so I would go for one of them.

“There have been very young captains in the past. Darren Fletcher was one, and there was Martin Buchan.

“He was 21 when he captained Aberdeen to their 1970 Scottish Cup win.

“Two years later he went down to Manchester United and they gave him the armband.”
