Moffat and Moore give Ayr breathing space

-

The Honest Men took the lead after nine minutes when experienced striker Michael Moffat cut in from the left-wing and curled the ball in off the post.

Forfar had their own chances to level the game through Easton, but he failed to find the target on both occasions.

Ayr continues to press in the first half and Mcdaid and Shankland were denied by home keeper Marc Mccallum as Ayr took a slender lead into the break.

Ayr stopper Ruddy almost handed Forfar an equaliser three minutes after the break when he spilled Millar’s freekick, but his defenders bailed him out as they cleared in time before Hilson got to the loose ball.

That let-off allowed Ayr to take control of the game and came close to extending their lead through Mcdaid and Mcguffie.

The three points were eventually sealed with 10 minutes remaining. Andy Munro was sent off for bringing Shankland down inside the box and sub Craig Moore sent Mccallum the wrong way from the penalty spot.

The first real chance came for the visitors when Danny Denholm hit a volley sweetly inside the box, but keeper Kieran Wright saved it well.

In the 17th minute, Rovers took the lead when Ross Perry whipped in a corner from left, which Conor Scullion flicked on and Alan Trouten tapped it home.

On 36 minutes, Arbroath levelled when Denholm cut inside and struck a shot that Wright parried into Omar Kader, who smashed into the net as the Rovers defence watched on.

Near the end of the half, Gavin Swankie fired a long-range effort which flew past the post.

After the break, Michael Mckenna struck a volley which he was unlucky to see rattle off the post and wide.

Not long after, Michael Mcmullin played a clever pass across the box into Trouten, but it was cleared before the danger man could pull the trigger.

In the 54th minute, Ryan Wallace was brought down by Mbayo and referee Craig Napier pointed to spot. Wallace stepped up to slot the spot-kick off the post and into the net to secure win.

Alloa started strongly and Jordan Kirkpatrick was not far away with an early shot which Willie Muir had to watch closely.

Ryan Conroy responded for Airdrie, but his shot was too tame and Neil Parry saved easily.

Iain Flannigan put the hosts in front midway through the first half with a finish from close range.

The lead did not last long as Dale Carrick headed the equaliser after 29 minutes from Jake Hastie’s measured cross.

But Airdrie passed up a great chance to go in front when Carrick was fouled in the area by Parry for a penalty-kick. The goalkeeper made amends, though, when he blocked Conroy’s spot-kick to keep the score level.

Kevin Cawley then rubbed salt in the wound when he put the home side back in front when he raced clear of the Airdrie defence to score.

Carrick came close for Airdrie at the start of the second half, but his header drifted wide of Parry’s post.

Darryl Duffy provided the equaliser in 58 minutes after a flowing passing move opened up the Alloa defence.

Scott Stewart was inches away from putting Airdrie in front when he met a cross at the back post, but the ball flashed wide.

Hastie almost won it for Airdrie in injury-time, but sent his shot wide.

stranraer 2 Queen’s Park 3

Queen’s Park took the lead on 17 minutes when Aiden Keena broke the offside trap. The on-loan Hearts man was clean through on goal and beat Max Currie at his near post.

The front man then doubled his tally for the afternoon after Stranraer failed to clear their lines and he swept home from the edge of the box.

Stranraer were given a glimmer of hope midway through the second half when Scott Robertson swept home. Substitute Dean Hawkshaw laid the ball off to the defender and he lifted a shot over the helpless Michael White from 18 yards.

But any chance of a comeback was killed off just seven minutes later as Sean Burns capitalised on some horrendous defending from Jamie Hamill before rifling the ball past Currie from the edge of the box.

Keena had a chance to complete his hat-trick after he was felled by Currie, but the goalkeeper redeemed himself to save the spot-kick.

Stranraer pulled one back in stoppage time when Grant Anderson was brought down in the box. Scott Agnew squeezed his penalty beyond White, but it was too little too late.
