Keeping the kids happy

- By murray Scougall

10 great days out for all the family.

March 31 to April 15

As the school holidays beckon, the search to keep the kids entertained for a couple of weeks becomes a full-time job. Scotland’s most famous rascal, Oor Wullie, will be up to all sorts when he’s off school.

In fact, he’s come up with a full itinerary to keep occupied during the holidays, and this will be published in a new book out on Thursday, entitled Oor Wullie’s Bucket List (Black & White Publishing).

In it, Auchenshoogle’s favourite scamp comes up with ideas like going fishing, playing with his catapult, learning the bagpipes and making a see-saw.

If your child or grandchild isn’t as enterprising as Wullie when it comes to finding something to do, we’ve come up with a number of activities happening around Scotland during the Easter holidays.

Science might sound too much like school work for Wullie’s liking, but we’re certain he would change his mind when he saw the huge number of entertaining activities taking place at Edinburgh International Science Festival (March 31 to April 15).

It’s the UK’S largest science festival and in its 30thh edition there are almost 270 events, from fun family days out too talks from pioneering thinkers.

Family festivalgoers can enjoy five floors of sensational science at the City Art Centre, Eco2ville is an outdoor exhibition on the Mound inviting people to explore a low-carbon future, and Existence: Life And Beyond is an interactive exhibition in the National Museum featuring three creative commissions.

Other highlights include

Zoo Trail: Hatch Fest

(March 31 to April 15) at Edinburgh Zoo. Inspired by the UK’S toy craze Hatchimals, this special Easter trail gives families the chance to learn more about the real animals that lay and hatch eggs.

Hatch Fest will introduce you to the eggs of a huge range of animals, including penguins, rheas, insects, owls, snakes and pelicans. On April 7 and 8, Dr Bunhead’s Easter Egg of Doom discovers the deadliest Easter egg in the world as TV’S favourite stunt scientist, Dr Bunhead, blasts bunnies into space (hopefully not literally!) in his search for the science Oor Wulliewul books are available online from www.dcthomsonshop. co.uk, or by calling 0800 318 846 (free from UK landlines).
