Lesley Manville was up for best supporting actress at the Oscars for the film Phantom Thread.

And while it was her former husband Gary Oldman who walked off with best actor on Hollywood’s big night, she deserves every plaudit going for this funny little gem of a TV show.

Lesley’s had plenty to laugh about, too, with loads of awards for this already.

She’s Cathy, still coming to terms with death of her husband and finding her feet as a widow.

Each episode is titled after the month it’s set in.

In this second series, we’ve moved on to a new year and are into July.

Nothing much happens – this week nice-but-dim son Jason and makes-him-looklike-a-mensa-member girlfriend Kelly have the house in chaos with an early start for a holiday – but it happens brilliantly.

Cathy has the patience of a multitude of saints as always as she copes with the mayhem and the barbs, intended or otherwise.

In the case of snobby sister-in-law Pauline, they are always intended.

Ouch!

Scot Peter Mullan is family friend Michael who quietly holds a factory-full of candles for Cathy.

The great news is that a third series has already been ordered.

Don’t keep this delight under you hat – Mum’s the word.
