A coastal charmer

- By Sally Mcdonald

▼ Hamish Macbeth. They stayed at Tigh-an-fhaing during the filming of the series.

Teresa remembers: “The cameraman and various stars stayed here, and I’m still in touch with the producer, Deirdre Keir, as she is still a regular visitor to Plockton.”

The house dates back to 1897 and was built for local doctor John Matheson. Over the years it has been sympathetically maintained and upgraded, providing all the comfort and convenience of 21st Century living without compromising on character.

It has an expansive formal dining room featuring a stone fireplace and cosy wood burning stove, along with a country-style kitchen with an Aga. The ground floor accommodates its bright sun room, while the first floor houses a magnificent sitting room offering the most awe-inspiring views.

And the rear portion of the building has been cleverly converted into a self-contained holiday let known as Tigh-anRoinn. It can also be entered from a door off the kitchen of the principal residence, making it simple to re-incorporate into the main building.

But despite its great location, flexible accommodation, and income potential, Teresa has reluctantly decided to place her beloved house on the open market. After more than four decades at Tigh-an-fhaing, she has decided to down-size to a smaller home in Plockton.

She says: “I love the location of Tigh-an-fhaing, with its views, particularly from the downstairs rooms and the sitting room upstairs, from where I can see the mountains of Torridon.

“I will be sorry to see it go, but it’s time for someone else to experience its joys.”

The property is being marketed by Strutt and Parker at offers over £599,000.
