Dumbarton manager Stephen Aitken was absolutely delighted with his side’s 3-1 victory against basement side Brechin City at Glebe Park, the second time in four days that his team came up trumps against the Hedgemen.

“This was a really big win for us,” he said. “We’ve got a lot to look forward to.

“We have the Irn Bru final coming up next Saturday and we now have both Inverness and Falkirk in our sights as far as the league is concerned so the games until the end of the season will be extremely interesting.”

The Sons got off to the perfect start scoring the opening goal with just 11 minutes on the clock when Dimitri Froxylias delivered an inch-perfect corner which was headed back across the face of the goal by Andy Dowie to Calum Gallagher who nodded the ball past Paddy O’neil.

It was 2-0 for the visitors 13 minutes later when another corner from Froxylias was headed down by Dowie and came off City defender Sean Crighton to roll past O’neil.

City reduced the deficit in the 38th minute when Craig Storie curled home a free-kick from the edge of the box but the Sons restored their advantage five minutes later when another Froxylias corner was headed across the penalty area by Dowie for Danny Handling who made no mistake from a couple of yards out.

City had a great opportunity to reduce the deficit again in the 71st minute when Crighton was fouled in the penalty box by Craig Barr but Kalvin Orsi fired the spot kick wide of the post.

City boss Darren Dods said: “To go 2-0 down so early in the match meant that it was always going to be an uphill struggle. The fact that we lost three goals from set-pieces underlined our disappointment.”
