A popular theatre is facing weeks of closure after a huge blaze in a nearby nightclub.

Victoria’s club on Sauchiehall Street, Glasgow, went up in flames on Thursday, causing damage to the adjacent Pavilion Theatre and a number of other buildings nearby.

The extent of the damage to the iconic theatre is not yet known but all shows for the weekend were cancelled as the auditorium was filled with smoke and ash.

Specialists are due to examine the building tomorrow.

When the fire broke out, more than 120 firefighters helped tackle it but surrounding roads and businesses including Cineworld and some pubs remained closed yesterday.

Two firms have contacted Glasgow City Council for help following the blaze, which broke out at around 8.30am.

Sections of Sauchiehall, Hope, Renfrew and West Nile streets were cordoned off until further notice, with the fire described as one of the biggest ever tackled by the fire service.

Assistant chief officer Lewis Ramsay, SFRS director of response and resilience, said: “We still have crews actively firefighting and taking progressive action to fully extinguish the fire.

“Considerable resources will be in place for the next few days and we will continue to monitor the progress. We will remain on the scene for as long as it takes.”
