CLUNY HOUSE GARDENS

Aberfeldy, PERTHSHIRE

-

This woodland garden was a labour of love back in the 1950s, when it was created by Bobby and Betty Masterton. Now it’s cared for by the Mastertons’ daughter Wendy and her husband John Mattingley.

Wendy and John are following in Wendy’s parents footsteps, as the same love and care is still in evidence today. You can often see them hard at work as you wander. The Mastertons were passionate about Himalayan plants, which thrive in the garden’s perfect conditions. Many of the seeds the Mastertons grew are now large trees, such as the lovely Tibetan cherry. There are also lots of blue poppies.

The gardens are a haven for red squirrels and it’s not unusual to see more than one – mornings are your best bet.

It’s the unusual plants and flowers that really make Cluny, though. Sometimes as you wander, you’re hit by a lovely fragrance.

If Wendy and John could bottle it, they’d surely make a mint.

The wooded area is great fun for children. It is a hillside garden, though, so bear that in mind when planning a day out. The whole Aberfeldy area is great for exploring. And if you love chocolate, make a point of visiting Highland Chocolatier in Legends of Grandtully.

You’ll be in chocolate heaven!
