Brushing up well: Artist hailed most stylish Scot
Byrne can still cut it in style stakes as he nears 80
Artist John Byrne was last night hailed the nation’s most stylish man – at 78.
The acclaimed artist and writer of the Slab Boys plays was one of the big winners at the Scottish Style Awards. The glittering ceremony at the Kelvingrove art gallery, in Glasgow, celebrated the country’s most stylish celebrities.
Dapper, bewhiskered Byrne’s eclectic dress sense regularly features Harris Tweed, heavy brogues and cravats. He was hailed as “authentically and effortlessly cool” by judges as he was named most stylish male ahead of nominees that included Outlander star Sam Heughan. Mary Mcgowne, founder of the awards, said: “It is a privilege to honour these amazing Scots, with so many of them flying in from across the globe to be with us. “We are delighted the show enjoys such high levels of respect and support from the industry.” Edinburgh-born artist and filmmaker Rachel Maclean – described by judges as “highbrow-meets-high-fashion” – was named the most stylish female.
Other winners included musician Roisin Murphy, who was named style icon of the year, while independent record store Rubadub won tastemaker of the year.
Most stylish retailer award went to Niche Bazaar Studio and The Voyage of Buck in Edinburgh was named the country’s most stylish bar.
The event was hosted by actress Pollyanna Mcintosh and red-carpet guests included hit band Young Fathers, musician Kyle Falconer, rising singer Be Charlotte and rugby star Finn Russell.
