Wes needs to be in Champions League for a cap

Wes Foderingham admits he has no chance of an England call-up until Rangers are playing i n the Champions League.

The goalie has watched his national team struggle to find a No. 1 for this summer’s World Cup, but doesn’t expect a call from Gareth Southgate. He points to the example of a fellow Englishman who was picked while playing for an Old Firm club.

“I think it’s unlikely that any England manager would come up to watch me playing in the league,” he said.

“A few years ago Fraser Forster got into the England squad when he was playing in the Champions League for Celtic and doing really well.

“Things might be different if Rangers get there. The Champions League is a whole other kettle of fish.

“It’s a different level and if you perform well, then you have half a chance.

“England is probably a far cry for me at the minute – even if they’re not doing too well with their keeper. “There are a lot of English goalkeepers in the Premier League doing well and it’ll be a big decision on who’s in the squad for the World Cup.

“People say they’ve got young goalies, but sometimes you forget how old people are. “Nick Pope has come in, but he’s almost 26. “Keepers tend to develop later, but the ones who have come in like him and Jordan Pickford have done well.

“It’ll be interesting to see who gets on the plane to Russia.” Foderingham is now 27 and he last represented his country at Under-19 level. Watching Burnley’s Nick Pope go from nonleague to the full England squad in five years can’t help but provide a bit of inspiration.

He went on: “It shows anything can happen. “Nick got an opportunity with Tom Heaton being injured and he has done fantastically.

“It’s my job to see how good I can be and how far I can go. I don’t know where that is yet, I’m still developing.” Rangers’ boss Graeme Murty, however, believes his No. 1 has one eye on becoming an international.

He said: “We’ve got guys going away on international duty and it possibly lit a bit of a fire under Wes to go experience it for himself. “You look at the way England play out from the back and see the way he deals with the ball really well.

“We need to be competing at the highest level for him to be considered, so he is tied into our fate.

“He’s been one of our stand-out players. “Sometimes he gets stick that is unwarranted, but that comes with the position.”
