Thomas Mikkelsen scored a seventh minute winner to give Dundee United their first backto-back victories since December.

A win at Brechin City on Tuesday will take Csaba Lazlo’s men a step closer to clinching a playoff spot but the Tannadice gaffer is taking nothing for granted.

He is well aware that the club drew 1-1 on their last visit to Glebe Park earlier this season and will warn his squad that they must not underestimate their opponents and undo their good work of the past week after this win and the midweek success against St Mirren.

Laszlo said: “This is a good win but maybe we could have won by more goals.

“It was nice to get the early lead and now we must take this into the game at Brechin. “But we have had a bad experience there already this season and we must make sure it doesn’t happen again. “We must be focused and act in the correct, professional manner.

“If we can win the game it puts us in a very strong position for the play-offs.

“Some of the players are in good form and we will be confident.

“It was good for Thomas to score today.

“He isn’t Maradona or Messi and he isn’t fantastic with the ball, but he has a good heart and is a team player. He is a good target man and wins lot of headers.”

The victory for United should have been more comfortable. But they are playing better than they were last month and they appear to have a bit of momentum.

Mikkelsen’s goal came after he slotted the ball home from six yards after a driven cross from the right-hand side from Willo Flood.

It was a good finish from the Dane but it was sloppy defending from Falkirk and it came about after the keeper Robbie Thomson was slack with a throw-out.

Billy King had chances in the game to make the scoreline more convincing. The same applies to Paul Mcmullan.

The best chance for the visitors fell to Alex Jakubiak in the 55th minute. He had a clear sight of goal from 12 yards but failed to hit the target.

The Bairns need one more win to make their Championship safety secure and boss Paul Hartley said: “Overall, the game was scrappy and we now move on. We still have work to do and we can’t switch off.”
