Who knew it could be so cold in Kenya? I

- By Bill Gibb

WAS born in Bosnia and when I was young my parents would often take me to Croatia.

We went somewhere different each year so I think we visited every place possible. I love the country and still speak the language.

The Mediterranean side feels like home.

I’ve had some lovely trips in the past couple of years, including seeing six countries in Africa.

I absolutely fell in love with Kenya. I love the north for the safaris and the south for the beaches.

You can be very active and see a lot and then travel a bit and chill out by the pool and on the beach. I think we saw about every possible animal during the safari.

We had rhinos running right behind us in the car and saw elephants really close up.

One day Erik and I went out on horseback and that was really different. We saw giraffes and zebra and monkeys which were incredibly close.

We were told that they were wary of people but didn’t mind the horses, so we got within literally a couple of metres.

One thing I wasn’t expecting was how cold it got when we went out on a night safari. I had every jumper in my case one on top of the other and still wrapped myself in a blanket. I think we had to get up at something like 2am and at first I was complaining at waking up so early and wasn’t sure it was worth it. And I’m also told that sometimes you can drive for hours and not see anything.

But we were so lucky to get to see this massive lion. It made it all worthwhile.

And somewhere that was a total contrast was Miami, where we had some great parties.

But there’s still a lot of places I want to go to. Top of the list would be Iceland, getting out in the snow with dogs.

And if we could get a chance to see the Northern Lights then that would round it off perfectly.
